In the culture of the ancient Slavs, placing stones on the eyelids of those passing away served a practical and magical purpose. It allowed their eyes to be closed, but above all, it provided protection for their loved ones. It was believed that the open gaze of someone departing had the power to draw others into the world beyond. The weight of the stone also acted as a barrier, meant to keep the soul in the afterlife.
In my project, I wanted to look at this myth from a different perspective and dispel its darkness. I created stone eyes that you can wear and look through. Thanks to pupils made of cubic zirconia, instead of darkness, you will see a rainbow hidden within them.
